or eight months. >> okay. so we've got the latest here including president obama doing an interview for "meet the press." the senate is scheduled to reconvene at 11:00 this morning. any deal today would have to be rushed through both chambers of congress before midnight. as talks in the senate stalled yesterday, minority leader mitch mcconnell reached out to someone he believed he could help jump start the negotiations and perhaps deliver an 11th hour compromise, and that would be vice president joe biden. mcconnell and biden reportedly spoke several times by phone throughout the night after talks with harry reid came to a halt. >> there's no single issue that remains an impossible sticking point. the sticking point appears to be a willingness, an interest, or frankly the courage to close the deal. i want everyone to know i'm willing to get this done. but i need a dance partner. >> before i continue to set the scene, anyone here think biden can make a difference? dan? >> not before the end of the day. i just think that even if the senate -- even if they work out a deal that's accept

think that policy based on fact is better policy based on revenge. one comment on the interview president obama did with david gregory he taped it yesterday afternoon at the very same honor that mcconnell was actually trying to get a deal done. so to me, the president actually wants an argument more than a deal. he could have been helpful and instrumental in getting things done every six months to go through a budget crisis with president obama, he could figure out a way to lead and bring people together earlier. they can't call in mitch mcdonnell until the 26th and complain he was there at the last minute. i think there's a lot to be done to improve legislative affairs at the white house and would ultimately help president obama. >> and said about that, but mcconnell is still is late, he could have imposed himself, and not the way he does it. here is the fundamental problem. leaving aside the policy issue which i know is important to you all. if i get down to politics on bumper stickers, you're holding all of this up, including people's tax cuts it defend millionaires, that's a

is basically launching this public campaign to pressure republicans. president obama came out on friday and urged them to get behind his plans. again today he sat down with david gregory, of course, during that exclusive interview on "meet the press" and urged republicans to act saying that it appears all they are interested in is protecting taxes for wealthy americans. republicans, by the way, lashed out at those comments saying the president seems more interested in placing blame instead of actually leading, but that at this point in time seems to be president obama's strategy to some extent, publicly pressuring republicans to act and to move on these negotiations. so that is where this stands right now. the white house monitoring everything that's going on the hill quite closely, but i can tell you, melissa, that there is a sense of optimism that is waning here at the white house. you can sense that when you talk to the officials here. >> well, the eternal optimist. vice president joe biden apparently dropped by the white house today. do you know if he and the president have spoken?

there will be a vote. some say they think we're going over the cliff. listening to president obama in a rare sunday show interview yesterday, he's obviously making it known, if we do go over the cliff, he is prepared to point the finger at republicans. here's what he said. >> all right. so we're struggling to bring you that sound, but basically he was saying that republicans are trying to protect the wealthy when it comes to taxes. and to that point, ali, we do have new information about where the proposal stands at this point according to democratic sources. they have actually gone up to saying $450,000, the first $450,000 of income, that would be protected from a tax increase. so that's higher, obviously, than what the president's starting point was, which was $250,000, and even higher than where he ended in his sort of discussions with speaker boehner about a larger deal. he was at 400 there. obviously, republicans want higher than that. we'll see where that number comes out. >> it's valid to say something's happening. in other words, that at least gives you some sense of negotiation, which is a
